Equipment for Aqueon 36 Gallon Bowfront

- #1
Equipment wise currently have:
-Heater: Aqueon 50 watt
-Filter: Aquaclear fifty & Penguin 170 (It is a discontinued one for those who call up its the 150)
-Light: 17w T8 Full Spectrum florescent
Planning:
-For sure I volition need more substrate. (Add more Eco-Complete)
-I would think I need another heater or just replace it with a more powerful one (100watt?)
-I don't retrieve my fairly new Aquaclear has enough BB withal so thinking to start off using both HOB filters, only would like to replace the Penguin with something. (Canister or Sponge? If sponge, will it be enough with the Aquaclear?)
-From reading other posts, the bulb for this seems to work fine for low light plants, but I accept some Microswords which I recall need a decent amount of light. So debating if I want a unlike light. I do kind of want the LEDs with the moonlight options, but non too sure how they'll piece of work with the plants.
-Speaking of plants, probably will be looking for some aquascaping stuff like driftwood and rocks.
Sorry for the long post. Been difficult trying to proceed my excitement down of upgrading the tank and desire to practise it correct. Whatever input is appreciated. Thank you.

And so 150 watts seems like a good one.
That's what I would probably practise. But to be on the rubber side.

I have this same tank from Aqueon, and ended up purchasing a Fluval 306 canister filter and Satellite + LED. Both pieces of equipment are working awesome and would highly recommend.

Realize this is an older mail service, but I thought I'd chime in.I have this aforementioned tank from Aqueon, and ended up purchasing a Fluval 306 canister filter and Satellite + LED. Both pieces of equipment are working awesome and would highly recommend.
Thank you for chiming in. All info is welcomed. Aye was thinking of getting a canister filter and replace my one-time penguin hob later on I do the upgrade. Although merely a minute agone, the penguin gave me a scare by not turning on later I did a water alter. Took it apart twice and thankfully information technology started. Seriously thinking of getting the canister now.
Light wise, as much equally I want to try led, due to financial strains, I'm going to have to go with what information technology comes. Though I probably volition change to a different seedling.

Not to sound similar a cleaved record, simply I cannot recommend the canister enough. Information technology has done wonders for my tank, fourth dimension, and budget long term. With HOB'due south I found myself having to purchase new media or do some kind of maintenance to continue them running smoothly. While the canister is more than expensive upfront, information technology is definitely worth it in the long run.
Keep united states posted! Merry Christmas!

Thanks. I will be getting a canister. Now the question is which one. Several people have been saying SunSun. I exercise similar the cost and has good reviews, just very wary since it is a Chinese off brand and looking at the negative reviews, they're consequent on the plastic slap-up and leaking.
Don't forget to expect at the dimensions. Some of the canister filters are nigh equally big as a store vac. Fluval'due south are a lot smaller than SunSun.

Yeah I have to make sure it can fit through the door on the stand. Currently looking at Fluval 206, 306 and Eheim classic 2215 & 2217. Thank you for the input.

My second Eheim I sold to a friend and they are still using information technology. Y'all tin can't crush a canister for ease of use!
Every bit far as lights, try Aquatrader.com when you get ready.
I buy a ton of equipment for less from those guys.

I love my aquatop and too my cascade-I use several of these two. My Eheim bit the dust-information technology was great and worked wonderfully-it was ane that came with a 90 gallon craigslist tank.

Leaning more than towards eheims after reading reviews for fluval and eheim. So for the eheims is the only way to prime them is to suck on the out tube or is at that place other ways bated from sucking? I wouldn't mind doing it on initial set up, simply rather not practise that when I do cleaning and such.

I was looking at the Classic 2215. The videos I saw anybody was sucking on it for setup.
The first time you ever set it up you will need to suck on the tubes to get the siphon going. Simply for regular maintenance, the double taps hold the siphon when you disconnect the filter.
I oasis't followed the unabridged thread (going to read backwards now) but personally, I would become for a 2217 for a 36g. I ran a 2215 on a 29 gallon for years and I always felt information technology was just a tad undersized when it came to mechanical filtration.. That little bit of actress oomph really helps keep the tank sparkling

Thank you for the info.
Yeah I've been debating almost 2215 & 2217. Slightly worried 2217 might be too stiff of a current for my smaller fish (CPDs). In that location will be an aquaclear 50 to run along with whatsoever I choose.

Cheers for the info.Yeah I've been debating virtually 2215 & 2217. Slightly worried 2217 might be too strong of a current for my smaller fish (CPDs). In that location will exist an aquaclear l to run along with any I choose.
You lot're welcome! Besides, yous can ever turn down the double taps on the eheim classics if the menstruation is too strong. Just adjust of the valves on the intake side of the canister to decrease flow. Many people think they're non adjustable merely they are. Just brand sure yous pass up the intake side and not the output side. Turning down the output would put dorsum pressure on the motor which wouldn't be good.
Good luck with your new gear up!

Thank you! I think I'll pull the trigger on the 2217. Before that though to double check, do you know the width of the of 2217? I simply have to make certain it can fit through the doors of the stand.

Will at that place be an issue if I start the new Eheim when I do the upgrade? There will be a seeded Aquaclear l running along with that.

Regardless, I'm not going to touch those valves, and instead I volition try first pointing the spray bar output towards the rear of the tank and slightly upwardly towards the surface, and 2nd I will drill the spray bar holes out a bit. Both should help decrease electric current IF information technology's too much facing towards the front end of the tank. Spray bar won't fit on the side of the tank unless y'all cut it down (optimal positioning in my opinion, but oh well). I know nosotros will be able to get the flow to work, since I've seen this filter on much smaller tanks (like 20 gallons!) and the fish don't get blown out of the h2o
There shouldn't exist a problem running the Eheim fresh in your tank with the seeded HOB. Sounds like you're moving your substrate over as well, so you lot should have plenty of bacteria between that and the old filter. After a few weeks you lot tin remove the HOB and stick with the Eheim.
I picked up a large filter media pocketbook from Drfostersmith that I plan to put the Eheim bio media in (Coarse Mesh w/Self-Fastening Closure 12" x 15" -- if you want to search for information technology on their website). Since these filters don't have media baskets, it should make dealing with maintenance much easier. The EHFIMECH cylinders that go in the bottom I'll just dump out once I've removed everything on top.
I volition exist growing low maintenance/low light plants in here too, merely the 17w T8 that came with the hood is pretty darn dI'm even in an empty tank (similar, no water even). Considering how tall this tank is (nigh 21"), I don't know how well it will abound even depression light plants. I have successfully grown plants with this forcefulness bulb, but on a 12" high tank which is a big difference. I plan to become a finnex fugeray planted+ in the near future. A 24" LED lite can be retrofitted into the hood if yous remove guts of the current light fixture from the fixture housing. No need to purchase a drinking glass hood. Anyway, if you do stick with the 17w T8, perchance concur off on getting more plants until you see how the current ones fair.
Best of luck, and I'll be right backside you setting mine upward!
